THE SECOND OF OUR WEEKLY LOOKS AT THE DIRECTORS REPORTS THAT WERE ISSUED ANNUALLY FROM THE COMPANY GOING PUBLIC IN 1952, RIGHT UPTO THE END OF NORMAL SERVICE, OR "THE SELL OUT YEARS" AS SOME WOULD CALL IT !!
So we continue with the second of Rob Brown`s submissions of these reports, the front page of this one showing a stylised painting of a couple of Euc R-15`s being loaded by a Marion face-shovel, a common enough site in the 1950`s.
Now we have one of the few fotos that we have seen so far showing the factory of our main supplier of that time, Euclid GB, at Newhouse. In 1954, the factory was still in its infancy, but it was in October of that year extended by a further 100,000 sq ft, more than doubling the size of the works, shown in the second of the 2 photos below.
Following we have what became, in one form or another, a permanent fixture in these reports, a worldwide image of the BH Empire (hence the section name), that existed at that time….
This item is a little strange, as it wasn`t a model (in this guise) actually built in Newhouse, only in Colombus, Ohio (see Eric C Orlemann). Therefore we believe that this would have only been brought over to UK if required, so was just an advertising gimic at the time. The very same photo appears in Mr Orlemann`s book (published 2004), dated 1954, the date of this brochure when BH used it, so who says the Yanks are 50 years behind ??
Again another couple of US images….on the S7, the grills are not blacked out, as all Newhouse items were, plus they did not produce one here until 1955, and the TS-18 prototype was only brought out in mid 1954, again too early for it to have been UK build. You will also note that the sales pitch runs over the next two pages at the bottom.
Following we have a machine, almost certainly a 15TDT with overhung scraper, which started life in the early 1950`s, and as cane be seen, owned by Sam Booth of Haywards Heath in Sussex, and the other photo being the Euclid Loader, used alongside similar machines in bottom dump form, working for Laing.
Next we find a close up of the tractor unit on one of the bottom dump models, from the size of the bowl, probably a 15TDT, and following up is the old faithful, an R-15 in the ownership of Gordon Harrison, from Yorkshire. Note the engine side panels on the FD, not seen much in later years.
Probably an early B7TD, the R-22, becoming the biggest truck of its day (in UK) in the mid 1950`s, plus something we definitely never saw, one of the twin engine, twin transmission, twin axle beasts the Yanks built, specified Model LLD, capable of 50 tons carrying capacity, and at that time the largest truck in the world.
Last machine shot is of the versatile Gradall, an expensive machine then and later, but extremely flexible. Two models shown, tyred & tracked.
Finally, we have another of those wonderful totally non-PC adverts they seemed to delight in back then. If you cant read the script, it is repeated below the image.
"SITE FOR A CITY. Soon this green hell will be torn from the earth whose riches it has squandered too long. Soon the Carlisle Graders, the giant Euclid earthmovers, the Euclid Tractors & Scrapers, the Marion Shovels and Draglines will clear, reclaim and irrigate the jungle floor, laying the foundations of a new city with hydro-electric power, modern drainage & sewage, motorways, railways, canals, airfields ……. soon the many who now listlessly scratch a precarious living from the reluctant soil will be busy and full-fed". That told `em didnt it !!
