SOMETIME IN THE EARLY 1980`S, HUNSBURY MACHINERY`S IMAGE WAS UPDATED, AND THE NEW LOGO, REPRESENTING A SINGLE "FOOTPRINT" OF A TYRE TREAD, USING A MODERNISTIC TYPE "H", WAS USED ON THE COVER OF A FRESH APPROACH TO SELLING OVERHAULED TEREX EQUIPMENT.
It was a collaboration between Ken Kirkpatrick, Director & General Manager, his staff at HML, and John Brierley, the BH advertising manager. The photos are self explanatory, as is the text, but take a close look at "Spiderman" as he was christened, the guy in the red overalls and helmet. Not only does he appear at both ends of an engine in one shot, but also at the wheel of 3 different machines in another !!
Now we know Jim Smith was good, but we didn`t know he was that good. Jim was one of HML`s machine inspectors at the time, plus being very fit (he ran in the Sydney Marathon sponsored by BH Australia one year), so he was able to get from one machine to another very quickly, although obviously, unless they used a very slow shutter, there was some photographic jiggery-pockery going on as well !! Smithy did get some stick for the "Spiderman" tag !!
It finishes with a line-up of HML rebuilds in grey primer, which used to be parked at the west end of the Directors Dining Room, facing the main Chassis Shop, for those familiar. Those R-35S bonnets always did look a bit tatty though, and the R-50`s, sold to Wimpey !!
Almost forgot, the brochure has not come from any ex Hunsbury-ites, but was picked up in Newhouse by our regular Dutch correspondent Ad Gevers, on a visit he had there years ago.
