AFTER A BREAK SINCE COMPLETING THE 1950`S, WE MOVE ON NTO THE SWINGING 1960`S WITH THAT YEARS DIRECTORS REPORT TO THE SHAREHOLDERS, CUSTOMERS & STAFF.
The format had changed a little toward the end of the previous decade, and continued in that vein, with a photographic cover, and with the "global look" refined now to lists of countries where The Company operated, and there appears to be a larger percentage of overseas images, not so many from the UK as we have seen before.
We start with the cover, almost certainly abroad, if only because the driver has a safety helmet on and not a cap, and what looks like a C6 on a tip of some sort…..
The Organisation….sounds like something completely different, and it is, gone are the globes now, lists will do….
….followed by the title page, showing who was who at that time, and still the tried & trusted team who had all almost been there from the start, and were all pretty much still hands on.
To illustrate that hands-on theory, we are going to steal a little tale from one of our number who hopes to contribute in the future, but who related to us recently that on Sunday morning shifts once long ago, a certain Bernard Sunley was sometimes to be found in the gatehouse, (instead of the gateman… saved double time pay !!) where in the early days, the manual staff clocked in. On this occasion, our man arrived at 7.58am for an 8.00am start, and on being questioned by B.S. as to whether he would be at his post, with overalls on, by 8.00pm, said "Yes", and sprinted across the yard for all he was worth into the workshops !!
What he didn`t tell us of course was whether he was docked for a late start on that day, but for those that never met B.S., which includes ourselves (much too young !!), this is an great example of how men of his calibre became as successful as they did, by watching the pennies, and letting the pounds look after themselves.
Back to machinery……R-15 in Nigeria, and a TS-24 in the UK, from Contractors Plant, owned by Bernard Schrier….still around today in his nineties, although the company has gone….
….not sure where the TC-12 is working…….perhaps R.S.A., while another UK name from the past, on yet another TS-24.
We dont go too much for reading on this site, other than the personal memiors, but we thought we would include one of Mr Sunley`s "Chairman`s Review", at least if for nothing else, to give the number crunchers amongst you something to bite on !!
Back to proper stuff….a couple of the not so well known agencies of BH, Marion & Cedarapids….
…..and again, Michigan & Gradall…….
….and a real rare one, not heard of by us anyway…Huber-Warco, then back to our reality with R-27`s on the ironstone, probably Corby or Scotland, and lastly…..
….Portugal & Khartoum, C6 & S7.
