WE HAVE MENTIONED THE WORK CARRIED OUT BY JBH FITTERS ON THE MANGLA DAM PROJECT IN PAKISTAN IN 1963/4 BEFORE IN BOTH KEN KIRKPATRICK`S & KEN LANSLEY`S REMINISCENCES.
We return again now because KL has come up with some more images, this time by producing photos off the many slides he took at the time, and they are well worth a look at.
Most of the machinery has had a mention, but just to remind you, there were R-30 rigids, 34LDT-47SH scrapers, known as SS-40`s, basically because it had 40 cu yd struck, 52 cu yd heaped capacity, and also of course the 34LDT-144W 63 ton bottom dumps, carrying 42 cubic yards, the beast was known as a B-63, (can you work that one out ?) not to mention several types of something called Caterpillar, which did a bit of pushing we are told !!!!
As none of these images relate to anything other than the Mangla Dam, we have included them in BH Overseas. On with the show then, feast you eyes on these animals from 45 years ago.
Three shots of a double header….
The machines worked 3 eight hour shifts, and at the end of each shift, as you would expect, everything stopped for oil, water, tyre & brake checks, so we see a lot of the fleet in these 3 images, awaiting the BH Canadian & British fitters, along with their local workforce…….
…thats KL`s Landrover in the foreground….
…dont want to get carried away, but doesnt this shot just exhude silent strength !!
Winding down now, and an example to show how good a photographer KL was, because this type of shot was used much later by JCB with a slack handful of 3CX`s, but Clancy did it first….
….perspective you call that…….
and finally, some of the workforce, locals first..KL on the bloke standing.."he was a strong bugger !!"
….the BH men to finish…KL, Art Brewster (BH Canada) & Arthur Blason…
and lastly the photographer himself…thanks for another great contribution Ken.
