SOME TIME AGO AFTER THE SECOND ILLUMINATING EPISODE OF HIS EARLY BLACKWOOD HODGE DAYS, WE MADE A COMMENT THAT, DESPITE THE TRAILS AND TRIBULATIONS BESETTING KEN JOHNSON AT THIS TIME, WE FERVENTLY HOPED HE WOULD FIND THE ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM TO COME UP WITH THE THIRD CHAPTER.
We should not have even considered for a moment that he would not come through, so here for your delight & delectation we have (maybe) Ken`s final part to his story…..although you never know with that man !!
So for all of us who at the time had no idea of what went on in the ranks of the "Africa Corps", lets have a fairly in depth look at the reminiscences of Ken Johnson from 1962 onwards.
KEN JOHNSON, JUNE 2011.
Apart from the photo of BH Kitwe (above) in 1964, here are a few more shots from Ken of various aspects of his African journey.
These photos have been transposed several times which has resulted in a lack of definition, but notwithstanding, still a good 1960`s record from part of BH`s farflung empire.
Firstly, a couple of shots from NcChanga Mine…….
…..both showing Euclid R-45`s at work…..
…..then what we think are R-35`s at Chambishi Mine, if you check out the wheel sizes, they are the same allround…
…..then a couple of shots of Euclid C`s near Balovale, which Ken describes as "rare birds" in that part of Africa, the name on the tractor reading "SOLWEZI"……..
…..and lastly, as you would expect, there was a time for relaxing, and although we are not sure quite who is who in these last images, hopefully anyone that knows Dave Turner (or Masterchef as KJ calls him) will recognise him in the first one…..
….and what were they cooking…. "the result of 4 rods fishing all day on the mighty Lake Kariba"..
….and finally the means of getting there, in its day, a fine machine, the Wolseley 6/110….
…….so once again, a great many thanks to Ken for making a mighty effort with this contribution, and we continue to wish him the very best.
The Editors.
